This will depends on a number of factors, including the area to be carpeted, weight of the carpet, the carpet underlay, whether you are carpeting stairways, whether you need existing floor coverings removed, whether your home or office has furniture that will need to be moved.  A lot of customers also often do not factor in carpet wastage which can be as high as 15% in many homes, due to the dimensions of the rooms.

How long does it take to have carpet installed?

Our carpet layers can normally install carpet for an average house in a day.  Larger and more complex projects may take longer to complete the carpet installation.

How should carpet be installed to ensure the best result?

Our professional carpet layers will ensure all carpet is professionally installed in accordance with Australian Standards.  Our carpet layers offer the option of vacuuming all jobs on completion, which also gives them another opportunity to check the joins and other details of the job.

What carpet underlay should I use?

A carpet underlay is the layer of cushioning that is installed underneath your carpet.  Whilst the underlay may not be able to be seen, the quality, cushioning and insulation attributes of the carpet underlay are paramount in ensuring the feel and performance of your carpet.

One consideration for carpet underlay is the thickness to choose, foam underlay being generally available in 7mm up to 10mm thicknesses.  A 7mm standard quality foam underlay such as Airstep Steplight would be considered a budget price option, whereas a high density 8mm to 10mm, such as Airstep Stepmax and Steplux would be regarded as more premium options, to give great support to your new carpet.

The main types of underlay are foam and rubber, with foam underlay become increasingly popular and cost effective in recent years.

Carpet Logistics can supply all the most popular carpet underlays from both Airstep and Dunlop Flooring.

Do you remove existing carpet / floor coverings?

Our Melbourne carpet installers will remove your existing floor coverings and dispose of it off site.  The cost of old carpet take-up and removal will be provided upfront when you book in your carpet installation with our team.

What happens to furniture when you are installing carpet?

What happens if there is an issue with the carpet installed?

Whilst our carpet installers take every care to ensure that your carpet has been installed correctly, there can be issues that may be missed during the process of the carpet being installed.  Don’t stress though, as our Melbourne customer service team will arrange a service call and follow-up in no time.

Preparation for your Carpet Installation

At the time of your purchase, your carpet retailer will contact our professional carpet installers to come and install your carpet.

Your flooring retailer will first send a professional estimator to your home to measure your floors. The estimator will determine exactly how much carpet you will need to buy and, in most cases, will determine the layout of the carpet in the room for the carpet layer to follow. Among other considerations, the estimator will decide where to place carpet seams, how to match patterns, and how to minimize carpet waste.

From there, one of our professional carpet installers will be scheduled. Flooring retailers have their own installation procedures, and you should ask for all the details they can provide. But the following guidelines will give you a good idea of standard carpet installation practices.

Who moves the furniture?

Although most installers will remove furnishings from the room, you should remove all breakable items--like vases, lamps, collectibles, and dishes--before the installer arrives. You should detach wiring from TVs, VCRs, stereos, and computers. You should also clear desktops, tabletops, and bookshelves.

Will the carpet installer move the piano?

The complimentary removal of furniture is often limited to those items that two men can easily handle. There may be an additional fee for large, cumbersome items, including pianos, pool tables, aquariums, and oversized furniture.

What if my doors no longer close?

Some doors may need trimming to accommodate the thickness of your new carpet. Doors that do not open and close properly due to the new carpet may be removed during the carpet installation, and it will be up to you to have the doors cut and re-hung.

What about mouldings?

It may be necessary to remove mouldings and reattach them during the carpet installation process. Because some mouldings, particularly quarter round, are fragile, breakage could occur. If it does, you will be responsible for replacing them. Scratches or nicks to baseboards are also a possibility, and you will be responsible for the touch-ups.

Will carpet installers move my water heater?

Our professional carpet layers aren't typically skilled in plumbing or electrical work. They will remove appliances from the room to install your flooring under or around them, but they do not typically disconnect or reconnect gas, water, or direct-wired appliances. Most carpet installers also won't disconnect computer systems.

What about the bedrooms?

All sheets, blankets, and spreads should be removed from beds before the carpet installers arrive. All items from the tops of dressers and from closet floors should also be cleared.

What if the sub-flooring is damaged?

All floor coverings need to be installed over a structurally sound and properly installed subfloor. Any wood that has been damaged by insects, water, or other factors should be repaired prior to carpet installation.

Do I have to remove my old carpet?

The removal of existing carpet on the day of carpet installation is typically a part of the carpet installer's service, but you should ask to make sure. Hauling the old carpet and padding away may require an additional fee.

Do I need to supply anything?

Carpet layers provide the know-how, the equipment, and the muscle; you provide the power. Installers will need to use your power for their electrical tools, and they will typically use such areas as porches or patios to store equipment.

Other Carpet Installation Tips

Either the night before or the morning of your carpet installation, vacuum the old carpet to minimize the airborne dust and particles that removing it will cause.

Also vacuum the subfloor after the old flooring and padding have been removed and before the new floor is installed.

Ventilate the room well by opening doors and windows and running exhaust fans.
